# Manchester hospital delivers UK's first NHS CAR-T therapy for aggressive blood cancer

Manchester Royal Infirmary delivered the UK's first NHS treatment with obe-cel, a next-generation CAR-T immunotherapy, to a 28-year-old patient from Bury with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia on 2 January 2026. That regulatory scrutiny, built on the unit's trial experience, is part of what allowed Manchester to be first to deliver the treatment once it moved from trial to routine NHS care.

The FELIX trial results showed 77% of patients who received at least one obe-cel infusion achieved remission, with more durable remissions, improved survival rates, and significantly reduced toxicity compared with other immunotherapies.

Professor Peter Johnson, NHS National Clinical Director for Cancer, said: "The journey of obe-cel from scientific research in a UK university to a safe, effective, and affordable treatment... is a remarkable one." A 77% remission rate for an aggressive blood cancer, combined with reduced toxicity compared with earlier immunotherapies, means more patients can complete treatment with a realistic path to full remission rather than facing the harsher side effects of older CAR-T therapies.
