# Cagwait fisherfolk mangrove kit goes on display at National Geographic

Fisherfolk in Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, built a mangrove and seagrass monitoring kit that is now exhibited at the National Geographic Museum of Exploration. MindaNews reported the kit sits alongside field tools from other explorers in the Washington museum that opened in June 2026.

## What is the background?
Mangrove and seagrass beds on the Pacific side of Mindanao are working habitat: they buffer storms, store carbon in sediment, and feed the fish that coastal barangays sell. Oceanus Conservation, a Philippine science NGO, has trained fisherfolk associations in Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, to identify and monitor those habitats instead of treating restoration as a one-day planting photo.

Camille Rivera, Oceanus co-founder and a 2022 National Geographic Explorer, led the community projects that produced the field kit. Oceanus says it has rehabilitated more than 35 hectares of degraded fishponds back toward mangrove forest, placed an estimated 400 hectares under conservation agreements, and supported planting on the order of 89,000 mangrove saplings. Those figures are the organisation’s own programme totals, not a claim about Cagwait alone.

## What happened?
MindaNews reported on 9 August 2026 that a citizen science kit from Cagwait’s mangrove guardians is on display inside the National Geographic Museum of Exploration in Washington, D.C. The 100,000-square-foot museum, which opened to the public on 26 June 2026, also holds Jane Goodall’s early field notes and an Apollo 12 moon rock. Rivera attended the private unveiling.

The kit is ordinary on purpose: a GPS unit, a seagrass field guide, and a mangrove assessment data sheet. Together with a phone camera and a data app, it is how residents of Poblacion, Aras-asan and Bitaugan West logged seagrass, saplings and mature trees they helped plant.

## How did it happen?
Oceanus ran two-day trainings and awarded certificates that, Rivera told MindaNews, the community received with pride. Fishers then used rehabilitation and survival-monitoring methods to record physical data rather than relying only on outside scientists’ seasonal visits. The museum asked for exploration tools; Oceanus sent the actual instruments of that monitoring, not a sculpture of a mangrove.

The exhibit’s argument, in Rivera’s words as carried by Oceanus and MindaNews, is that inclusive conservation is science plus local labour plus a record anyone can check. Putting a data sheet next to a moon rock is a curatorial choice: it says coastal monitoring counts as exploration.

## Why does it matter?
Mangrove projects fail when seedlings are counted on day one and never again. A kit that lives with the people who fish those waters makes survival rates a village job. International display does not restore a single hectare by itself, but it documents a method other coastal towns can copy without waiting for a foreign field team.
