# Garden wildlife cameras for hedgehogs, foxes and birds

For garden hedgehogs, foxes and badgers, look for a fast trigger, no-glow infrared that does not wash out close subjects, dependable power and a stated weather rating. Mount it low, about 20 to 30 cm off the ground for hedgehogs, pointing at a feeding station or water bowl. Keep cameras away from active nests and badger setts, and frame the shot so it only records your own property.

## Where to put a garden wildlife camera

Hedgehog Street suggests placing a camera about 20 to 30 cm off the ground, looking straight along to where you expect hedgehogs, such as a bowl, feeding station or gap in a fence. The Wildlife Trusts say a feeding station or water bowl is the best place to point it, and suggest daily checks that the camera still works and the memory card has space.

Use lithium batteries in cold weather, Hedgehog Street advises, and set sensitivity high so passing hedgehogs are not missed.

## Respect wildlife law and your neighbours

- **Hedgehogs:** the British Hedgehog Preservation Society says wildlife cameras let you watch without disturbing them, but advises against flash and never to disturb a sleeping or hibernating hedgehog or open a nest box in use.
- **Badgers:** GOV.UK says badgers and their setts are protected by law. Disturbing badgers in setts can lead to up to 6 months in prison and an unlimited fine.
- **Nesting birds:** the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to intentionally damage or destroy a wild bird's nest while it is in use or being built. The RSPB advises leaving nest boxes alone until the end of the nesting season.
- **Privacy:** the ICO says that if a camera records beyond your property boundary, data protection law applies. Its guidance is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act.

## How to choose

- Night lighting: no-glow infrared is the least visible; low-glow gives a faint red glow when triggered. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society advises avoiding flash.
- Close-range exposure: The Wildlife Trusts say cheaper cameras often overexpose animals within 1.5 m. Test the distance to your feeding station before leaving the camera out.
- Trigger and recovery: quick triggers and short recovery times help catch passing foxes and badgers. Check video trigger speed if you mainly record clips.
- Resolution: headline megapixel figures are often 'image capability' rather than the sensor's native resolution. Judge cameras on their video, not megapixels alone.
- Power: count the AA batteries needed, use lithium batteries in cold weather (Hedgehog Street), and check for an external power jack or solar option.
- Weather rating: the Browning and Bushnell pages we checked do not state an IP rating, so check the manual or ask the seller.
- Mounting: for hedgehogs, Hedgehog Street suggests about 20 to 30 cm off the ground, looking along to where you expect them. Check the strap or bracket options.
- Privacy: frame the shot inside your own boundary. If it can see a neighbour's garden, the pavement or shared space, data protection law applies. Turn off audio if you do not need it.
- Warranty: Bushnell's warranty page lists trail cameras under a 2-year warranty, despite a 'lifetime warranty' banner on its site. Check the listing's model code matches the maker's.
- No subscription: the cameras here are non-cellular and record to a memory card, so no data plan is needed in a garden.

## Before you buy anything

If your aim is to help garden wildlife rather than film it, you don't need a camera. BHPS feeding advice centres on meaty hedgehog food, meaty cat or dog food or cat biscuits, fresh water only, and several feeding stations cleaned after use. The Wildlife Trusts note that for beginners, starting with a cheaper camera is a good idea, and borrowing one from a friend or local wildlife group costs nothing. If birds are nesting in a box, the RSPB advises leaving it alone until the end of the nesting season.
