# Changing your name for UK volunteering and charity work

Volunteering itself does not require a deed poll. A community group may use an everyday name, while a DBS application, charity trustee record or bank mandate may require an official name and evidence connecting earlier names. Ask the organisation handling each record what it accepts.

## DBS and charity records

The [DBS applicant guide](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dbs-application-forms-guide-for-applicants/dbs-application-form-guide-for-applicants) asks applicants for their current name and other names used from birth, including concurrent names. Its [digital identity guidance](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dbs-identity-checking-guidelines/dbs-digital-identity-verification-guidance) says the current official name should match official ID. A deed poll does not replace disclosure of previous names. For registered charities in England and Wales, the [Charity Commission](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-update-your-charitys-details) asks for trustees' full legal names. It has a display-name route where publication could create personal danger.

## Free and paid document routes

For people aged 16 or over, [GOV.UK provides free wording for an unenrolled deed poll](https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll/make-unenrolled-deed-poll), with instructions for signing before two adult witnesses. Some record holders may ask for an enrolled deed poll; check before preparing or paying for a document. A postal or solicitor service may help with paper delivery or individual advice, with prices and scope varying by provider.

**Commercial relationship:** InstantDeedPoll is run by the same team as Small Good Things. Its [paid adult deed poll PDF*](https://instantdeedpoll.co.uk/) was listed at £14.99 when checked on 23 September 2026. A purchased PDF is not a completed deed poll: it still needs printing, signing and witnessing. The service is independent, not HM Government or a law firm. The paid link is sponsored; GOV.UK's free route is available above.

## Updating identity documents

The [HM Passport Office](https://www.gov.uk/changing-passport-information/names-dont-match-official-documents) and [DVLA](https://www.gov.uk/change-name-driving-licence) each publish their own evidence requirements. Updating one record does not update another automatically. Keep the previous-name evidence needed for DBS and ask each record holder what it needs. This guide concerns England and Wales; other UK jurisdictions can differ.
